What Outlook Mail IMAP Will and Will Not Get You in Windows Live Mail

With IMAP access to Outlook Mail, you will not get your contacts and calendars synchronized.

All your existing folders and messages will appear, be accessible and automatically synchronize across computers and browsers, though, just like before; of course, you can also send new messages and replies using your @hotmail.com, @outlook.com or other Outlook.com and Windows Live Hotmail address from Windows Live Mail.

Access Outlook Mail, Outlook.com, Hotmail in Windows Live Mail

To set up an Outlook Mail, Outlook.com or Windows Live Hotmail account in Windows Live Mail (using IMAP to synchronize mail and folders):

1. Go to the Accounts ribbon in Windows Live Mail.
2. Click Email in the ribbon.
3. Enter your Outlook Mail, Outlook.com or Windows Live Hotmail email address under Email address:.
4. Type the account’s password under Password:.
5. Make sure Remember this password is checked.
6. Now type your name under Display name for your sent messages:.
   1. ​You can pick any name, of course, or add a job title to your name, for example.
7. Make sure Manually configure server settings is checked.
8. Click Next.
9. Make sure IMAP is selected under Server type: for Incoming server information.
10. Enter “imap-mail.outlook.com” (not including the quotation marks) under Server address:.
11. Now make sure Requires a secure connection (SSL) is checked.
12. Verify 993 is entered under Port:.
13. Make sure Clear text is selected under ​Authenticate using:.
14. Enter your full Outlook Mail, Outlook.com or Windows Live Hotmail email address (such as “example@outlook.com”) under Logon user name:.
15. Enter “smtp-mail.outlook.com” (again disregarding the quotation marks) under Server address: for ​Outgoing server information.
16. Now enter “587” (ignoring the quotation marks) under Port:.
17. Make sure Requires a secure connection (SSL) is checked.
18. Now make sure Requires authentication is also checked.
19. Click Next.
20. Now click Finish.
